Athlete Pathway
The athlete pathway in tenpin bowling provides a structured journey for individuals of all ages and skill levels. It begins with Active Start (ages 0-6), focusing on fostering a love for physical fitness and introducing bowling basics. The FUN-damentals stage emphasizes enjoyment, fitness, and foundational skills for youth and beginner adults. Learn to Bowl builds on these basics, adding technical and tactical training, while bowlers choose between competitive or recreational streams. The Train to Perform stage enhances physical and mental preparedness for competitive bowling, progressing to Train to Compete and Train to Win for provincial, national, and international success. Finally, Bowling for Life promotes lifelong participation and wellness in a fun, social environment.
Active Start
Ages 0 to 6
- Promote the love of physical fitness
- ABC’s of Physical Literacy (Agility, Balance and Coordination
- Introduce the basic principles of bowling (scores don’t matter)
FUN-damentals
Less than 2 years bowling
- Aim is FUN and fitness
- Introduction to bowling basics, goal-setting & focus/re-focus
- For youth and beginning adult bowlers
Learn to bowl
2 to 5 years bowling
- Continue to hone fundamentals
- More complex technical and tactical skills introduced
- Psychological preparation introduced
- Bowlers decide to pursue competitive or recreational stream (Train to Perform or Bowling for Life)
Train to Perform
5 to 8 years of organized bowling (competitive)
- Competitive stream requiring training to excel up to national/professional level
- Training both on and off the lanes, and cross training through other sports
- Physical and mental preparedness
- Coaching becomes in-depth via qualified coaches
- Consistent execution of physical, technical, mental and tactical elements
Train to Compete
Competitive Stream - Organized bowling for 8 to 12 years
- Consistently place in the top three at Provincial Championships
- Meticulous training regimen for peak performance in competition
- Year-round training is planned and follows a single periodized program
Train to Win (National)
Competitive Stream - Organized bowling for 12 years +
- Consistent top three finishers at National Championships
- Specific training programs to endure the stresses of high-level competitions
- Physical, technical, mental and tactical skills are fully established
- Focus on consistent and optimum performance in intense competition
Train to Win (International)
Tenpin Competitive Stream - Organized bowling for 12 years +
- Maximize all skills and capacities for podium performance and consisitency at international levels
- Engaged in creating a training, competition, and recovery program
Bowling for Life
For bowlers, coaches and volunteers of all ages
- Bowlers, coaches and volunteers who chose to participate in the sport in a less competitive context
- League and tournament play is at a less intense level
- The main objective is life-long wellness and fitness in a fun & social environment
